According to Dieter Zetsche, a fully electric ForTwo will be on sale to the public beginning in 2010. Smart currently has an electric version of its little ForTwo in Europe known as the Smart ed. This uses a sodium-nickel-chloride (Zebra) battery, the 41 horse electric motor has plenty of power to move the vehicle around, and urban performance is said to be improved over the standard model. The Lightning GT sports car was revealed by automaker Lightning Car at the British International Motor Show on Tuesday. The Electric Lightning GT is an all-electric car with zero emissions from it’s own engines and it can accelerate to speeds “over 130 mph,” according to company specifications. Read more

Halfway through Al Gore’s challenge today calling for a 100% renewable electric grid within ten years is a call for plug-in electric cars. VW’s Polo Bluemotion offers great fuel economy but it’s a little expensive. It might be worth trying the TDi version instead.
The rising cost of running a car, plus fears over CO2 emissions, means car makers are thinking harder than ever about the kind of vehicles they are building and so they are producing ever more efficient cars.
The changes to the Polo body are subtle. A faired-in grille, smaller mirrors and a rear window spoiler help lower the drag. Its special 14-inch alloy wheels are fitted with skinny, high-profile tyres which reduce rolling resistance. Read more
